Advance Child Tax Credit Payments Taxpayers who were eligible to claim the child tax credit in 2003, AND who claimed the credit on their 2002 returns, were due to receive an advance payment of the $400 per child increase in the child tax credit last summer or fall.
The Treasury Department began mailing checks in late July and continued sending out checks into the fall. The IRS expected to mail out about 25 million checks.
For taxpayers who had already filed their 2002 returns, the advance child tax credit rebate checks were mailed in three batches: July 25th, August 1st and August 8th.
The rebate check mailing schedule is set according to the last two digits of the first Social Security number on the return:
00-33 -- Mailed July 25th 34-66 -- Mailed August 1st 67-99 -- Mailed August 8th.
Eligible taxpayers whose returns were not processed in time for these initial mailing dates had their child tax credit rebate checks sent out after the IRS processed their returns. If you have not yet filed your 2002 tax return by now, you will not receive an advance child tax credit check. You must claim your child tax credit on your 2003 tax return instead.
